Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of families every year, but many people are surprised to learn that women are impacted in an imbalanced way. Nearly two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s are women, making awareness, education, and early planning especially important. Women are not only more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, but are also more likely to be a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s. While researchers continue to study why women are at greater risk, factors such as longer life expectancy, hormonal changes, genetics, and caregiving stress may all play a role. No matter what the cause, women need to be educated on the legal planning that they can do ahead of time.
Planning ahead is one of the most important things families can do, ideally before a diagnosis, but if not then as soon as possible after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Medical and financial estate planning documents such as durable powers of attorney, advance directives, and trusts can help protect both individuals and loved ones while ensuring a person’s wishes are honored. And the proper planning can help avoid the probate court process of a guardianship, conservatorship or estate.
Conversations about Alzheimer’s should not wait until symptoms become severe. Early action can provide more choices, reduce stress for caregivers, and create a clearer path forward for everyone involved. Danielle Mayoras, legal expert and estate and elder law attorney, talks with CBS News about what women need to know and the support through the Alzheimer’s Assocation at an upcoming event “Women Conquer ALZ“.
